Professional Background of John Barnes
Since 1982 the majority of my work experience has involved the trucking or truck insurance industries. I have had a life-long interest in trucks and obtained my first driving job at the age of 19 hauling peas and sweet corn with end dump trucks.
After a couple of summers trucking, I began work at a Peterbilt Truck Dealership in the parts department. I also delivered new and used trucks between dealerships and customers.
During the summer of 1986, I held an internship position with Foden Trucks in England. The internship provided a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of the truck manufacturing business from production to marketing.
I continued my truck driving career both full-time and part-time with Madison Freight Systems with daily runs between Madison, WI and Chicago, IL.
In 1989 I began working as a Fleet Manager for Capital City Distribution Inc. This was a rapidly growing specialty products distributor with 29 locations nationwide. I was responsible for the fleet operations and safety of 65 trucks. I also played a key role in the overall logistics of the products moved by the private fleet and airlines. During my years at Capital City Distribution, I directly supervised over 25 employees. I implemented a safety program and gained a Satisfactory Safety rating with the FMCSA. I was responsible for driver training and vehicle maintenance.
I completed my education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 graduating with a BA in Economics. While there, I was awarded the Merle Curti Prize for best undergraduate research paper. In 1997 I completed my Masters degree at the Minnesota State University. My thesis topic was titled “Containerization: Impact on Labor and Industry 1960-1990.” While at Minnesota State University, I held positions as Research and Teaching Assistant. I was awarded a research scholarship along with awards to attend conferences.
From 1997 through 2007 I had a career in the truck insurance industry as a company underwriter at Federated Insurance and Northland Insurance. I also worked as a truck insurance underwriter at two wholesale brokers, Robert Schneider Agency and National Truck Underwriting Managers. In my insurance positions, I did extensive underwriting reviews of trucking risks from 1-250 power units. These reviews included the application, accident reports, claims notes, loss runs, safety programs and FMCSA safety sites. It was my job to determine fault in accidents and serve as final judgment on the risk’s acceptability and pricing. I have extensive knowledge of insurance coverage forms and the MCS-90. I attended numerous seminars on trucking safety.
In 2007 I started Barnes & Associates Inc. to provide clients with expert witness and trucking consulting services. I have a contract with Commercial Transload of Minnesota-Trucklines Inc. as Director of Operations. The company has a 60,000 square foot warehousing and 19 power unit trucking operation specializing in steel and bulk commodities. I am responsible for company management, safety compliance, driver training, daily operations and logistics.
I have written numerous expert reports pertaining to the trucking industry. My reports have covered a range of topics including; fatality accidents, load securement, insurance coverage issues, trucking operations and driver training. On several occasions I have provided litigation support for both plaintiff and defense cases. My support included reviewing depositions, affidavits, accident reports, and insurance coverage forms. I provided attorneys with advice and general knowledge of the trucking industry with regards to the specific cases. Although many cases have settled through mediation, I have provided expert testimony in Federal Court.
